The Bica Elevator is much more than just a simple means of transport; it is the living postcard of Lisbon. Inaugurated in 1892, this funicular travels along Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo — often voted one of the most beautiful in the world — connecting the area of Cais do Sodré to the vibrant Bairro Alto.
Going down or up its steep slopes is like taking a trip back in time. Among the flower-filled balconies, clothes hanging in the sun, and the Portuguese pavement, the iconic yellow of the carriages stands out against the blue of the Tagus River, which peeks at the end of the street. Designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, the same engineer behind the Santa Justa Elevator, the
A Pink Street is proof that Lisbon knows how to reinvent itself without losing its soul. What was once the city's "red-light district", a dark refuge for sailors and bohemians along the banks of the Tagus, is now one of the most vibrant and photographed streets in Europe.
Officially called Rua Nova do Carvalho, it gained its new face in 2011, when the asphalt was painted a shocking pink to signal the birth of a new cultural and leisure centre. Among the stone arches and old facades, the street has transformed into an open-air gallery where iconic bars, such as Pensão Amor, coexist with live music clubs. It is a place of contrasts: calm and photogenic during the day, electric and noisy when night falls and the lights reflect on the colourful floor.
Portugal is the European country with the most restaurants per capita. Restaurants and cafés are part of Portuguese culture.
Our location in Cais do Sodré, like Bairro Alto, Chiado, and Alfama, is famous for its variety of restaurants, nightclubs, and places for breakfast.
In our building, we have H3 Café with burgers, Janis for a delicious breakfast, SOI for irresistible Asian street food, Corrupio for the best Portuguese dishes, and Brilhante for a great steak with the best fries and a huge variety of whiskies.
The building across also has a wide variety of choices... Israeli, Lebanese, Peruvian, Mexican, Italian gelato Santini, Sophia pizzeria / Italian food, and so on... and the wonderful JAVA Rooftop Bar & Restaurant.
